What Your Landscape Needs in March to Prepare for the Growing Season
March is when a landscape wakes up. As temperatures begin to rise, your landscape shifts from dormancy into active growth. This is the month to prepare the soil, manage water flow, and feed plants so they enter spring strong.
Check all gutters, storm drains, drainage basins, etc. to ensure rainfall and storm flow move freely and safely thru the property.
Clean out, add proper soil amendments, till/turn over and prepare vegetable garden beds or raised planters for April planting.
Apply fertilizer to all perennials, shrubs, trees, etc, with the exception of Spring-blooming shrubs.
We recommend a combination of an organic fertilizer such as Holly-tone®, in conjunction with a slow-release, coated fertilizer like Osmocote®.
Azaleas, forsythia, Quince, and other spring-bloomers should be pruned and fertilized as soon as blooming is complete.
A little attention in March goes a long way. Taking care of these steps now helps your landscape establish strong roots and steady growth, setting the stage for a beautiful and manageable yard all spring and summer long.
